Clockwise (1986)

Clockwise was a film starring John Cleese (Monty Python) as Brian Stimpson and Alison Steadman as his wife Gwenda Stimpson. Stimpson was the headmaster of a comprehensive school, who always ran his life by the clock.

Everything was perfect for him until one day it all went wrong. Stimpson ends up battling against the clock and a series of amusing obstacles in order to get to a headmasters' conference in time! Stimpson's obsessive time-keeping hides a dark past of lateness and letdowns. Its a great classic film.

Always preferred this to A Fish Called Wanda, yet it's often dismissed in favour of that film. Watch out for a great cameo from the late Michael Aldridge as the Abbot of a monastery where Stimpson takes refuge - he has only six words to say, yet it's a complete characterisation. Wonderful.

My Dad was one of the extras in that one- part of it was filmed at Birmingham University, where he worked as a medical biologist, and some members of staff were asked to take the roles of the conference delegates. They didn't have to say or do anything, just make up a crowd in the background dressed in mortar boards and gowns. He thought it was a great laugh!!

A classic movie, with a cast list which reads like a Who's Who of 1970s and '80s TV actors, A theme tune by George 'Bergerac' Fenton, and probably the second most well-known John Cleese/Austin 1100 collaberation commited to celluloid.
