Battle of the Planets

You can find this on DVD now, but I watched it regularly. It preceeded "Volton" and Power Rangers, and was clearly the prototype. It was a Japanese cartoon about 5 teenagers with special powers to protect their world. There was the stud guy, the princess, the fat guy, the kid, and another guy not quite so studly. Each had a different vehicle, and a uniform with a beaklike visor. And the main villian appeared to wear lip gloss. It was bought by Saban of Power Rangers fame in the 90s and relaunched as GForce, basically taking the cartoon, and redubbing the cartoon with completely different scripts.

Don't forget Tiny (the fat one) and Seven-Zark-Seven, who ran the underwater base, typical japanese animation (out of focus distant objects etc.), but it was the first to make it to the west, plus it was new and different in the fact that it had aliens as the bad guys instead of ghosts and dodgy relatives as in Scooby-Do. You're right Steve, the ship turned into the Fiery Phoenix when needed.
