Adverts ADVERTS

Birdseye vegetable club

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

This was an advertising angle for Birds Eye in the 1980's

In the ad - the lyrics of the song were ...''we're sorry you can't join our club'' . I used to cry my eyes out everytime the ad came on because i felt so sorry for the vegetables that weren't good enough to join ''the club''.

I agree- 'Cannonball' was a major feature of Birds eye pea ads, there was one when he tried to cheat the other peas into the Birds Eye packet by using roller-blades (it backfired when he lost control of the blades and overshot the pack, shooting past yelling 'Yaarrghh!' when the oh-so-perfect Birds Eye jobs were safe in their bag). But it begs the question- why would a sentient pea want to be eaten anyway?!! Surely he'd be better off getting a job with DEFRA or something! A promo alarm clock was issued to go with the ads, you had to save up so many tokens from Birds Eye vegetable packets to get it- in old-fashioned double-bell style, it was nonetheless battery operated and featured two laughing Birds Eye peas at the end of each hand, with an exasperated Cannonball in the lower right hand corner looking utterly desperate!!

Yeah, I remember it too- it had an alternate tune, 'Goodbye Goodbye, Farewell Farewell, you just can't join our Club". That one showed the chosen vegetables riding through a picket line in a limo, with angry mobs of sub-standard veg waving placards all around it. One of the picketers was the infamous pea 'Cannonball', who had his own ad. specially promoting Birds Eye peas.
