I remember these were all the rage. I remember having a pair of purple/orange checked Oxford Bags (a form of loose-fitting trousers that originated from Oxford University in the 1920s). I wore mine with a bottle-green leather jacket, which were all the rage then. It came to the hips and had two slant pockets a zip in the middle and three seams down the front on each side. This must have been about 1975.

The Bay City Rollers were renowned for wearing tartan-style Oxford Bags. I also remember people wearing them with platform shoes!

    Oxford Bags were extremely baggy trousers more akin to A-line flares. Oxford Bags had to be worn with platform style shoes or they looked even more ridiculous (if that was possible!) Males had to stand with their legs spread VERY wide when stood at the urinal or a very embarrassing stain would ensue.

    Are they the trousers with an incredible amount of buttons (12 on the waistband and 2 for each pocket)? I had 2 pairs of those; blue and grey. I used to wear them with, what I think were called, Penguin Shoes. I had a picture of me taken in the Old Market Square, in Nottingham. I've recently seen the photograph and I look a complete idiot. Still smiling, though!

    Tragically my first senior school uniform trousers were basically black oxford bags. This was in 1977 when they were already well out of fashion. Thanks mum! My brother was a punk at the time so I got him to take them in so they ended up as drainpipes. I must have had enough material left over to make another 2 pairs!
