David the Gnome was a cartoon that was on Nickelodeon in the 80s or 90s. It was about David the Gnome and the whole gnome community. I'm pretty sure they solved little problems like things about friendship and other problems children encounter.
It was based on a book called The Gnomes And The Secret Of The Gnomes by a pair of Dutch authors. David was married to Lisa (also a gnome) and he travelled around on a fox named Swift. Together they helped to heal sick children and generally bring good to the world they lived in. In the last of the 26 episodes aired, David and Lisa let Swift go and they then turned into trees. It was a sad day in gnomeland.
