Hammer House of Horror

Circa 1980. The Hammer House of Horror story titles included were "Children of the Full Moon" starring Diana Dors and spookie werewolf kids, "Charlie Boy" starring Angela Bruce and a murderous African fetish, "Witching Time" starring Jon Finch and an evil witch from the 1600th century and "The Silent scream!" starring Peter Cushing. The ones I have mentions are just my favourites from the series. Who else remembers their favorites?

There was one episode that I don't know the name of, when a family of three are driving home through a torrential rainstorm in their Morris Marina and stop at a crossroads to give a lift to a mysterious stranger. The chap doesn't speak, and is completely enclosed in oilskin waterproofs so nobody can see his face. Attempts to engage him in friendly conversation prove fruitless, and before long he suddenly attacks the Dad, who loses control of the car. There's a terrible crash, in which the father loses a hand- as Mum and the teenage son struggle desperately to help, the strange attacker makes off into the night and is never seen again. Dad ends up in hospital, traumatised and having lost the ability to speak- he can only make little 'glonk' noises. His wife is in little better shape than he is. At this point I was interrupted in my viewing and don't know how the story ended, but if anybody else does, I'd be glad to know what happened. And who was the mystery man they picked up? Jeremy Clarkson, probably.... Parodied in Spitting Image as 'Hamster House of Horror', this series was delighted in by the punk fraternity who loved seeing the dark side being visited upon mainstream society!

The series was originally transmitted in 1980 but I didn't see it until the following year when ITV broadcast it late on Monday nights during the summer holidays. The most memorable episode for me was 'The House That Bled To Death'. Who could forget that gory birthday party scene? My friend and I loved 'Hammer House...'. We'd pretend the tenement building we stayed in was haunted. It was an old Victorian building, dark and atmospheric with spiral stairs. The slightest breeze would make the lightbulb rattle above us which made for a perfect setting. It was a great series and it had the scariest theme tune ever!
