Story Teller

Story Teller was a collection of partwork magazines published by Marshall Cavendish. Each magazine came complete with a cassette tape featuring narration of all the stories included in each issue. There were 26 magazines in each collection.

The magazines and cassettes came with their own binders and hard plastic carry case, so it was possible to keep them all together.

Story Teller was originally released in 1982 and went on sale fortnightly. It featured around 7 stories each month and the original included many popular fairytales. The second series of the collection 'Story Teller 2' featured a lot more original stories. The tapes featured narration from many popular actors and actresses of the time including Sheila Hancock, Derek Jacobi and Richard Briers.

They were great for those who could read, but wanted to improve on their skill, with a distinctive 'ping' sound on the tape everytime you needed to turn the page if you lost track of where you were.

All the stories were adorned with luscious, colourful illustrations, with a different artist illustration each individual story.

After the release of Story Teller a collection specifically for younger readers was also published - 'Little Story Teller'.

The illustrations in this magazine were stunning. I can't think of any modern children's magazine illustrator that would go to the effort of creating such detailed, beautiful drawings. Thankfully I still own some of them and I'm able to gaze in rapture over them. The Wind In The Willows pages were wonderful. I might attribute my love of literature now to the pleasure I had reading these!

We only got Series 1 here in Australia and it was called Story Time. I loved the stories and have worn the tapes out. Bought replacements from Ebay recently to share with my PPrimary students. Very excited to learn there were more series and Little Story Teller. Can't wait to get those!

I remember my Mum coming in to the living room to find me in tears. She asked what was wrong, I told her that I didn't want Pinocchio to turn in to a boy, I wanted him to stay a puppet...

Wow I remember these, I had ones with The Wizard of Oz on, and Gobbolino The Witches Cat. I remember the PING, and the lovely bits of music in between the tales.

My uncle collected these and split the 6 binders and tapes between my cousins. It was great, I used to listen to it for hours.
