Blackjacks

Four for a penny, Blackjacks were little chewy sweets wrapped in greaseproof black and white paper wrappings and a favourite for the old mixed-bag selection. More like a chalk grey than jet black, too many of them would turn the inside of your mouth and tongue a nasty black colour, much to the dismay of many mums. Because of this, it wasn't a good sweet to sneakily eat at playtimes. Blackjacks often used to be mixed with 'Fruit Salad', a chew sweet or around the same size with a distinct favour and bright yellow and red wrappers.

I'm surprised nobody demanded a name change as well as changing the mascot from the g******* to something else.

I had some of these the other day in a large "Grab bag" with the Fruit salads and was disappointed to see they - like most childhood sweets - have in fact shrunk in size!!! Still taste just the same though!!

Didn't they used to have a (dare I use the word now) golliwog face on the wrappers at one point? What I find really annoying is the fact that I can only seem to find my beloved old Fruit Salad chews as a mixture with Black Jacks. I love the former, but hate the latter!
