Oric 1

This was out the same time as the Spectrum 48k. We thought it was better, but those keys were a pain in the bum!

our mum + dad bought us an oric in the 80's, it was supposed to be 'the next big thing in computers' according to my dad. probably to soften the blow of not being able to get hold of a spectrum. (which was top of the xmas list). all i remember is all of us sitting up till 1am on boxing day, trying to type in the program for frogger!! we had so many problems getting the games to run, that when we did it was like we'd won the lottery!! god knows what happened to it. i think the company only lasted 5 minutes before it went under

The Oric flight simulator was absolute rubbish! The ZX81 flight simulator was far superior- all in 16K- amazing!

I went through 3 Oric-1's, starting with a 16k and then being upgraded to a48k and finally to a new 48K Oric Atmos, with a good keyboard and all. Still the games sucked and it never caught on enough to compete with the ZX Spectrum. Still have it boxed and in mint condition... one day it might be worth something!!!

My dad had an Oric (trying to emulate Orac by any chance), he had it to take back with him when he worked away in Oman, programming to pass the time when not at work, he took it back three times as it kept breaking, I never took my Spectrum back once (but I wish I had hung on to the ZX81, show my smart-arse son what we had to put up with). I think it's reliability problems killed it, there's only a few people even remember they existed.
