Mr Frosty!

Oh, Frosty the snow... erm, slush puppy maker, was a jolly, happy soul. And when you'd tried whatever came out of him, you were pretty happy too. Something to do with all the E numbers, I suspect.

Mr Frosty was indeed a delicious invention. And one that put him at the top of many a Christmas list in the 80s. Mr Frosty was a snowman-shaped piece of white plastic (think The Marshmallow man from Ghostbusters) with a sweet, smiley face and the word 'FROSTY' emblazoned across his front in red. We all wanted this little fella, because it meant we could make slush puppy drinks to our heart's content, or until we got severe brain freeze!

The premise was simple: place a few ice cubes into Mr Frosty's head (his hat acted like a plunger to help crush the ice), then turn the handle on the back of Mr Frosty and out comes your slush puppy through the opening in his stomach. Just make sure you've got one of the official Mr Frosty paper cups to hand, and finish off your masterpiece with your favourite flavoured colouring. The colouring was added with a little help from Percy the Penguin, as the TV ad had dubbed him. Percy was a plastic little bottle you could put the juice into and then squeeze into your slush puppy. It was the perfect cooling drink during all those scorching summers we used to have (remember those?). The Mr Frosty toy also came with a set of ice lolly moulds in case you got bored of slurping through a straw - you just placed them in the freezer for a few hours and, hey presto! And when the flavourings ran out, there was always a bottle of Vimto in the kitchen cupboard to substitute. Nowadays of course, if you've still got a Mr Frosty lying around the house, you could try making some rather less innocent iced drinks or boozy lollies.

The only real flaw with Mr Frosty was getting the ice to crush - you needed a bit of muscle power and a lot more ice than you'd expect in order to fill a couple of cups. Despite this, the toy is still popular with budding mixologists, and seems to have undergone a few facelifts courtesy of Hasbro along the way. Mr Frosty was, and always will be, one cool dude.

I had a Mr Frosty, got him for xmas one year. It wasn't easy making the ice into slush though. I got quite protective over it, and one time my younger cousin got hold of it, and opened one of my precious sachets, getting it all over my mum & dads landing carpet.

I never had the real Mr Frosty but I had a fake one. It was a gift from one of my mothers friends. I remember it being near impossible to shave the ice, it would take ages just to get a small amount of ice. Cool concept though considering how much I loved Slurpees. These days I use the Sun Beam Avalanche machine, which is much easier.

i envy my brother as we both wanted one but only he got one. i still dream of getting one every night as i sleep but he's never there in the morning. my brother often reminds me off his magical moments making cruched ice drinks for everyone with mr frosty and the hole in his tummy making endless amounts off frosty ice with syrup and ice lolly sticks but he has the fond memories and im left with lingering disappointment and envy. if only i could turn back time and steal my brothers my frosty. fury !! shona m ( aka gutted sister) x

I'm another one who was not allowed it. We should start a support group.

Did anyone have one of these who really wanted one? I, too, am another who wanted these as a kid and never got one. Did the parents know something we didn't (apart from the obvious)?

i remember the old ones, where you crank the handle to crush the ice. well, at least trying to crank te handle before it snapped off and cut you in the hand! mr frosty i evil and he hurt me
thunercats_hooo21-Dec-2007, 11:53:08 AM

It was a childrens toy built like a snowman and you put ice inside and added flavouring and it came out like a slush puppy drink. There were only two type of flavour i think.

After a good few years of pleading I eventually got one, but I wasn't strong enough to turn the handle and only used it about once. I thought it was boring from the word go and looked so much more fun on the advert. Even at that age I felt conned!

I never had one because the e numbers in the syrup made me hyperactive!! Didnt the syrup come in a pengun shaped bottle or something!

Some I one worked with admitted that when they were young they begged their mum for one of these & eventually got one, but broke it when trying to crush too much ice with it.

Me and my bro had a Mr Frosty and loved it! But I remember in the mid 80's a kid severed their finger whilst making a slushy so my Mum didn't let us play with it any more! Gutted! She hid Mr Frosty under her bed and we used to sneak him out without mum knowing!*
Steph*26-Sep-2006, 12:46:58 PM

Mr Frosty was the best! And mine never broke I must of had him for at least 3 summer's - all though my mum use to make ice out of squash so I didn't need to keep buying the syrup. Although my bouyfreind can even remember the song from the commercial - that is prehaps taking it a bit far!
Kimmy24-Sep-2006, 10:27:16 PM

I asked for a Mr Frosty every single Christmas but never got one. I visited my friends house and she had one. The only thing was it didn't work since she had tried to mash ice-cubes with the puny plastic handle - and it had broke. It was then that I realised how rubbish the thing really was. I'm glad my parents never succumbed and bought it for me.

yes i remember him, i had one when i was 5 (now 26!) i loved him but iwas only allowed to play with him when id been a good girl ( i think this was becauase my mum didnt want me playing with him all the time and making a mess every where!) i used to put the ice and sachet of flavour in him and turn the handle and flavoured ice would come out of his tummy in to my cup !! i thought he was great. p.s my mum didnt know id secretly found him in her bedside cabinet and would sneak him out now and again tee heee hee XXXXX

I'm feeling everyones pain, I also always wanted a mr frosty and never got one. I dont think I'll ever get over it!
DYR23-Jun-2006, 02:54:19 AM

I had a different sort of one but I remember Mr.Frosty. "Mr.Frosty is so fun, he makes treats for everyone. Pull up his hat, pour in th ice. Turn the handle just like!"
DYR18-Jun-2006, 01:17:12 PM

I remember my much younger sister got one of these for Xmas. Even as a kid, i realised how naff it was. You had to make ice cubes on an industrial scale as everybody wanted one, and the juice soon ran out. Also turning the ice crusher handle, whilst excerting a downward force on the plunger was impossible to do without help from a grown-up. Pity we never kept it, it's probably worth a fortune on Ebay now!!.
Kes14-Jun-2006, 07:50:07 PM

Mr Frosty!!! great! Although i remember that it took soo long and tired hands to finally make a cup! If my memory serves me correct, was it percy the little penguin that came with it??
Jordan07-Jun-2006, 02:59:09 PM

I thought i was the only kid who didn't get one because all of my friends had them and i didn't. it would seem I wasn't the only one with a skinflint mother. depriving a child of mr frosty - just cruel!!
louise30-May-2006, 03:24:31 PM

i also was never allowed a mr frosty. my mum used to say its only crushed ice and a waste of money, but the tv ads made it look so great. i am still scarred today - i missed out on so much. Why did so many mums destroy the lives of children??
jenny.a27-May-2006, 10:43:54 PM

Everyone I know is emotionally scarred from not getting a Mr Frosty- hubby included!
Kez07-Jan-2006, 10:37:17 PM

Remember Mr Frosty...a plastic white frosty man into which you poured crushed ice and colouring to make 'lovely' fruite ice drinks which were like slush puppies, there was also another version along same lines called Mr Fruity, looked like a tree stump with an orange head on top and you poured water in and a packet of fruit flavoured powdery stuff and out came a really sherberty fruity drink. Loved them both!
pp102-Nov-2005, 06:14:30 PM

I was never allowed one either! all i got was making tango lollies in the freezer. never the same.
Gordon25-Apr-2005, 03:09:04 PM

i too always wanted a mr frosty but my mum would never get me one, i'm now 25 and see they still sell them in the shops , i have to buy one for my children when they are old enough, not sure they will appreciate it quite as much as i will!!!!
donna wilson12-Dec-2004, 06:55:05 PM

I always wanted one of those and every chirstmas i asked but never got one! I suppose my mum guessed it was a waste of time without being able to buy refils.
