Huffy Thunder Road
Huffy Thunder Road : My Huffy Thunder Road was an Easter present in Dayton, Ohio (ca. 1978). I remember the long, black tufted vinyl seat, the spongy rubber grips, the plastic mud fenders with stickers, the padded crossbar, etc. Most of all I remember jumping ramps and crashing into each other on our figure-eight track!

Also remembered...

R-R-R-Raw Power was a handle-grip accessory for children's bikes that made a kind of motorcycle engine noise when revved. It was very similar to the VaRooom and Za-Zooom which did the same kind of thing. The R-R-R-Raw Power had a better noise than the Za-Zoom though and didn't need a battery.
Most kids fitted R-R-R-Raw Power handle grips to bikes like the Sears Spyder, Huffy Thunder Road and the Raleigh Chopper that were made to look like motorbikes anyway.

My Huffy thunder road came to me x-mass of 1978. I remeber we lived in an apartment and I wanted this bike really bad and i came down xmass morning to open my gifts and the Bike was not there. SO, like Ralphie on the Christmass Story, my dad said, I think the light is on in the basement, wonder if Santa could have went down there.. And tha twas that, we moved into a new house that spring and i remeber riding my new huffy around meeting the neighbors. I really thought i was something and you know what I was....If only i could go back 1978....

I got this bike back in the late 70's for xmas. I had it for 10 years until someone broke into my garage and stole it. They left an old schwinn with a banana seat behind. I remember how much fun I had riding that bike. I kept up with all the kids with the diamond backs and mongooses. Ole 54 was great and was even easier to carry a passenger with the rectangular seat. I remember there was even a thunder rose for girls. It would be great to see that bike again. I don't see it anywhere, even on ebay. Maybe Huffy should go retro. LOL

Yes, I remember my first real dirt bike from Pep Boys in Santa Ana Ca. around 1976. It had a black frame with plastic number plates that never really stayed in the bike. But it was a bike that I road for many years around Orange County Hills when there were no homes and cars. I almost forgot what the bike looked like since it was a very long time ago.

I had the world's only huffy/schwinn hybrid. I converted my orange banana seat bike to a Huffy Thunder road when I was about seven. I bought the handle bars, the seat and the number plates. The Schwinn frame resembled the Thunder Road frame almost identically except it was orange. That was the only giveaway by the time I was through accessorizing. (That and the fact that you could not break a Schwinn frame as easily as a Huffy's.) My mom sold it at a garage sale for seven dollars when I was ten. If anyone out there came into possession of an oddly colored, unusually durable Thunder Road, I'll buy it back.

I wanted one so bad and on my 9th birthay in 78 my father brought me home a huffy "Barnstormer. It was white with skinnier tires. I was p*ssed because it was like the stripped down thunder road. The number plate had a cartoon picture of a byplane flying through a barn.

I had the same bike, only that the frame was a pewter metallic grey flake finnish, and the number plates were "38", and not "56". I think I was 7 or 8 at the time. Anyways; it was a dream to ride, and none of the local bullies on their BMX's could even come close to catching me! LOL

I recently fixed up a Huffy Thunder Road bike I found in a Dumpster here in Denver. Patched the tubes, freed the frozen chain and installed new derailler cables. Original purple with decals and now I have an idea how old it is. Good for the casual riding I do and now you now at leas one still runs! I'm 53 and built a few bikes when younger ( Mom's uncle owned a bike shop and sold me stuff at his cost). Best to all, Pat in Denver
