A Flock of Seagulls

Sure there was first this little band called the Beatles who had lots of Gold records (1M+ sold) and won several Grammy Awards; but who was the next band from Liverpool to acheive this level of success? If you said 'A Flock of Seagulls', you're a winner!

I vividly remember the song "I Ran" as this goofy, totally low-budget video with two really ugly space girls who tried to look cool. But what no one will ever forget is lead singer Mike Score's swooping, seagull looking, over-hairsprayed blonde hair do-do. You have to admit it, how many of us went out and bought shirts that buttoned up the side after seeing these guys?

AFOS had 3 albums from 1982 to 1986 and charted many singles including "Space Age Love Song", "Wishing", "Nightmares", "The More You Live" as well as Grammy winning "D.N.A."

They were fun, great to sing-a-long with and quintesentially New Wave. If they released a new album today, I'd turn off my Atari, turn up the collar of my Polo shirt, put on my skinny piano-key necktie and go buy it.

Only thing of theirs I've ever heard is 'Wishing', but it's such a powerful, haunting song that I've just ordered myself a copy from eBay. Thanks to Mr.Quattro for enlightening us all as to where they got their name- I remember that Stranglers track as well, it's from their 'Black & White' album and similarly great.

Just about everyone who remembers AFOS will associate them with 'Wishing'. 'I Ran', I thought, was a much better song, but too few people thought the same, so it stalled outside the top 40, which was such a shame!

I've often wondered whether the reason why 80's dancing was so static was that any strenuous movement would probably result in your make-up running or the hair gel wilting? Any 'Wishing' was a good one for just kind of 'Loitering' on the dancefloor at the School disco IMO.

I was heavily into rock music at that time but Flock of Seagulls were unique in their own way and "Wishing" was a very hauting tune but I resisted the temptation to buy it

i had my hair cut by the lead singer who was a hairdresser,he asked me what i thought of their band name (they where not known then) i told him it was a silly name and a flock of pidgeons sounded better.!!!!!!

The best thing I ever seen about "Flock of Seagulls" was in a flashback on the TV show friends. In it Chandler and Ross came home on a break from collage and Chandler had that huge wave of hair just like the lead singer in the group. I laughed so hard I almost "WANG CHUNGED".

The first time I saw them was back in the early 80's at Blossom Music Center outside of Cleveland...totally blew me away :)
