Cadbury's Smash
Cadbury's Smash :
"For mash get Smash". The Smash robots are a 70's advertising classic well remembered by all who saw them. The robots would laugh at the silly earth people discussing how they would cut up potatoes and then smash them up before eating them (how old fashioned).
Of course the seventies was a brave time of 'out with old, in with the new' and everything but everything had to be modernised - even potato preparation it seems. Welcome to the future of mashed potato.

Also remembered...

This was an animated advert that featured a girl day-dreaming about her boyfriend. "This is me, thinking, as usual about Dave. Dave is super! Dave can do anything! Oh!, 'es really great! she says. Then POW! Out pops my fairy godmother with an"'I'll give you three wishes routine." Wish number one is easy. (Dave appears). Next... I wish we were both at the sea-side. (they are now at the sea-side). "Come on, Dave... let's swim," I say. Dave gestures with his hand waving no. She gets angry, saying, "What 'e really meant was, 'e could'nt Swim!" Still got one wish left remember! POW!! "Meet Mike ("Allo!"), 'e swims like a fish." Dave feeling dejected says to the fairy-godmother, "I wish... I wish I didn't keep losing me birds!'" to which the fairy godmother replies, hitting him with her magic wand, "Then, learn to swim young man! Learn to swim!"

I hated the stuff. The only good thing about Smash was the adverts! Who ever thought of dried mash potatoes?

The advert with the Smash Robots was tops. We used smash on camping trips! I have just been given an old fridge magnet which gives the laugh of the robots when pressed.

we used to make smash aliens out of burger cartons and straws, try it you'll have minutes of fun.

those robots were really scary, i still think they are trying to infiltrate my mind

People really believe that they are laughing about us peeling potatos ? They are NOT! They're laughing about what they are going to DO to us, FOR peeling potatos. Notice that you don't see them advertising it nowadays - they realised they were being too obvious and as the nuclear arms race increased throughout the 70s and 80s (as well as the exploration of Mars), they became worried we would develop a weapon that might be capable of fending them off. So now we have the cats - operating in a more covert way - the real sleeper cells of the 21st century.
Donnie D 25-Feb-2005, 09:08:37 AM
Think about it for a moment. They have technology for interstellar travel (and therefore God knows what type of weapons) and are obviously pschotic given all that mad cackling they do like some sort of James Bond villan. They're too unpredictable and obsessed with potato substitute - hardly important in the grand scheme of things. Obviously the potato is sacred to them which is why they need a fowl instant alternative. What are they going to do when they find humans cutting them with a knife and skinning them alive and eating them ? They'll turn nasty - you mark my words.
Donnie D 25-Feb-2005, 09:25:23 AM
Sorry - I should explain about the cats. I mean the Puma Happiness and Hyena Happiness from the new Cadbury adverts. They are even more sinister than the robots.

This is not exactly a memory i just need someone to settle an arguement (the type you have in a pub) I think that the smash potato robots landed in Huddersfield or at least Huddersfield was mentioned somewhere in the advert. If anyone can confirm this could you put me out of my misery and maybe earn me a drink or two off some very adamant people who say i am crazy...Maybe I am!

nige 07-Aug-2005, 08:54:41 PM
I've only seen the ad on these "Top 100 Ads" lists that appear on Channel 4, don't remember it as an actual ad. Ate lots of the stuff after I'd left home & before I married. Tasty enough with butter & hot milk, how nutritous was/is it ?
Aidan 08-Aug-2005, 12:01:19 PM
This advert scared the living c**p out of me when I was little.
Suzy 08-Aug-2005, 08:15:05 PM
Haha!! I never understood what these alien tin things were going on about but it made me laugh as a young kid. We used to eat Smash when we went on holiday - LOVE IT!!
Ljay 13-Aug-2005, 09:01:57 PM
I was young at the time (young teenager anyway) and I these adverts, they made me laugh due to the sheer silliness and sadly I do admit to singing along with the jingle. My dad even bought me a silver 'Smash Robot' charm which I lost in a burglary some years ago - The older I have become, I regret losing it, dont suppose anyone knows where I could buy one? Thanks :)

I second Donnie D, the cadbury happiness adverts scare me! On the subject of Smash, what could be more sinister than an organisation that attempts to dissuade a nation from gaining skill with knives? Those robots were onto something and they used their cover organisation 'Cadbury' to deliver their message. You see, this conspiracy runs very deep because, if we are skilled at working metal into sharp objects, what will become of the invading robots when they come in wave after wave of merciless and terrifying mechanical mayhem? What if we used tin openers? I have it on good authority that they see tin openers as a savage and brutal weapon of unbelieveable cruelty. As for Cadbury, why do they make chocolate so good that you have to eat more and more and it's still not enough? Side effects of this drug make us fat and incapable of fighting back, remember i told you this. You mark my words, the Smash robots are evil, evil i tell you, EVILLLLLLLL !!!!!
steve 20-Jan-2006, 09:32:07 PM
Yes, Huddersfield was definitely mentioned !
Clive 21-Jan-2007, 03:13:07 PM
The robots were in their ship looking down on earth through their monitor and they saw someone making mashed potatoes. Smash. They were looking at Huddersfield and said "Huddersfield! Huddersfield! There is intelligent life on earth" Best ad ever. Still remember it clearly
BahamaRed 17-Apr-2008, 02:21:49 AM
They were classic. As a (very) young boy I used to wish they could come up against Doctor Who!
PompeyPete 23-Apr-2008, 02:05:36 PM

If anyone has the fridge magnet which apparently laughs when you press it, can you please tell me what type of battery it takes. I have one without a battery and can't get hold of a replacement. Thanks.
