All Gas and Gaiters

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

A gentle ecclesiastical sitcom aired on BBC 1 from 1966 to 1972.

I remember Derek Nimmoy being the chaplain, and William Mervyn as the Bishop.

Fond memories, and life-shaping for me as a young boy.

Robertson Hare played the Archdeacon. John Barron/Ernest Clark played the Dean. And Derek Nimmo played the Chaplain!! Oh Brother wasn't a spin-off but a completely different series, running at the same time as All Gas and Gaiters(roughly). But you're right, G and G was funnier. I think it'd be repeated as much as Dad's Army if more episodes survived! The DVD is well worth checking out if it's still available. The series was an obvious precursor to the likes of Father Ted and The Vicar of Dibley, though much more genteel! William Mervyn as the Bishop was the most obvious Ted antecedent due to an occasional tendency to selfishness and material things ahead of spiritual matters, though his greatest vice seemed to be the odd glass of sherry! His real name was apparently William Mervyn Pickwoad, and his son, Michael Pickwoad is currently the production designer on Doctor Who!

I think his name was Nimmo, not Nimmoy. It was a very gentle comedy, with Robertson Hare as the Dean, who was the funniest of the characters for me. It spawned Derek Nimmo's spin-off series 'Oh Brother' but I didn't find that as funny. Makes me feel old when I think how long ago this was on!
